The Nittany Lions make a statement during their first conference win over the Trojans at home.

Penn State women’s volleyball kicked off Big Ten play with a 3-2 win over No. 17 USC on Friday night at Rec Hall. 

This statement win sends a message.

Beating a ranked team in the first conference match sends a message that Penn State is prepared to face conference opponents head-on. The Nittany Lions showed they can match up with top-20 programs in high-pressure moments, particularly in decisive fifth sets. With a long conference schedule ahead, starting strong with a win sets the tone as they prepare for several ranked opponents in the coming matches. This was a confidence-builder for a team that is still adjusting their rotations and in front of a home crowd in one of the toughest environments to play in.

Serving pressure changed the game.

Penn State’s seven service aces rattled USC’s passing and disrupted their offensive flow. Five different Nittany Lions chipped in aces, displaying their depth and strength at the service line. In a match where momentum swung between the first two and second two sets, consistent serving pressure was a strong factor that kept Penn State competitive through rough patches, ultimately giving them the win in the fifth set.

A balanced team wins challenging matches. 

Penn State had three players with double-doubles, Martin, Sellman, and Lyon, and five players recording double-digit digs. That balance speaks to the team’s ability to round out long, unwavering matches. Multiple hitters reached double-digit kills, forcing USC to defend the whole lineup rather than putting all of their effort into one leading attacker. In one of the most competitive women’s volleyball conferences, that kind of roster-wide contribution from the Nittany Lions will be the key to surviving their Big Ten schedule.
